How Trade Agreements Will Effect Your Intra Company Transfer

Trade Agreements Janice P Warren
While for most Canadians, USMCA (previously NAFTA) is the most widely known trade agreement there are many others that have immigration consequences for Canadian businesses looking to send professionals to several countries. Below are some general requirements for an intra company transfers according to different trade agreements.

CCFTA Canada- Chile

  • min work experience: 1 year in preceding 3 years
  • max duration: 3 years, extensions possible
  • education requirements: university degree or title in related field required for all occupations
  • must be an employee with a salaried contract with Canadian employer

Canada- Peru 

  • minimum education: bachelor’s degree or professional license
  • max duration: 3 years
  • minimum work experience: continuous employment for 6 months out of three years preceding application

Canada- Columbia

  • minimum work experience: bachelor’s degree or professional license
  • max duration: 3 years
  • minimum work experience: continuous employment for 6 months out of three years preceding application

CPA for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

  • minimum work experience: 1 year in preceding 3 years 
  • max duration: 3 years, allows extensions
  • divided into four categories: Executive, Manager, Specialist, Management Trainees - theoretical and practical knowledge needed for professionals and technicians

Canada - Korea

  • max duration: 3 years, extensions allowed
  • min education: bachelor’s degree or professional license in related degree

CETA (Canada-European Union)

  • max duration: senior personnel 3 years, extensions possible, graduate trainee 1 year with no extensions
  • minimum work experience: 1 year preceding 3 years of the application
